Mount Nebo


'Ele viu,' said the guide, 'mas nunca entrou.' He saw, but never entered.
And with that, the Brazilian group bowed their heads and recited the Lord's prayer, voices thick with emotion.

I look out westwards from the summit, only to be confronted by a brown and barren landscape. Whatever milk and honey there once was has clearly since dried up. On a clear day, it is said you can see as far as Jerusalem but, back in Moses's time, I suppose the holy city didn't yet exist.
