'Of course there are fireworks,' squealed a friend in delight. 'This is Dubai – they have fireworks for the opening of an envelope!'
True to expectations, there is a light and sound show – and some pretty spectacular fireworks – to round off race day at the newly-refurbished Meydan stadium. They must have announced the winner of the last race – the one with the extraordinary US$10 million purse – by this stage, but quite a bit of champagne has been quaffed, and I have no recollection of which horse has won. Someone somewhere was probably celebrating in style, but it wasn't me, and I decide to sneak out quietly before the Elton John concert to get what fitful sleep I can before my flight out early the next morning.
