Ghost Forest

En route to Euston this morning, I find myself wandering among the uprooted stumps of Angela Palmer's Ghost Forest in Trafalgar Square. At over 50m, Nelson perched atop his column (pictured through the tangle of roots above) is of a height at which most of these deracinated trees would once have stood.

I'd read about the project in the FT about a month ago, and am delighted to see it come to fruition (insofar as dead trees can be said to come to fruition). The roots and stumps have different hues and grains and textures, and the trees themselves bear delightful names: denya, wawa, anokye... There is also a mahogany, and three species of celtis.
