The royal domain is vast – the size of Paris intra muros. In the middle of it, rising out of the forested plain in an unbridled fantasy of tufa masonry, is the Château de Chambord. Here, surely, is a masterpiece of the French Renaissance: an edifice breathtaking in size and exquisite in ornamentation; not the seat of power, as the audioguide points out, but its manifestation.
