Road to Ranakpur

It is mid-morning when we leave Udaipur. The paved road soon peters out, and we buckle up for a bone-clattering ride. 'Rajasthan mountain!' mutters the driver disapprovingly, as we climb the Aravalli hills. 'All stone!'

And all stone it was. We pass numerous quarries, weaving in and out of the slow, mining traffic like a Rajput steed amid a field of lumbering Mughal elephants.

The quarries, however, eventually give way to little farmsteads and villages. We chance upon a little ox-drawn well-wheel and stop to explore it further under the nonchalant gaze of the farmer (just discernible in the picture above).
